Study guide

Family vocabulary includes die Mutter and der Vater (die Eltern means parents), der Bruder and die Schwester (die Geschwister means siblings), der Sohn and die Tochter, die Großeltern, der Onkel and die Tante, and der Cousin and die Cousine. Possessive adjectives take ein-word endings: mein/meine (my), dein/deine (your), sein (his), ihr (her or their), unser (our) and Ihr (your, formal).

School words include die Schule, die Klasse, der Lehrer and die Lehrerin, das Buch, das Heft, der Kuli (pen), der Bleistift and der Rucksack, and subjects like Mathe, Deutsch, Englisch, Geschichte and Biologie. Food words include das Frühstück, das Mittagessen and das Abendessen, das Wasser, die Milch, das Brot, der Apfel, der Käse, das Fleisch and das Gemüse.

Days of the week are all masculine: Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag, Samstag and Sonntag; "on Monday" is am Montag. Months include Januar, Februar, März, April, Mai, Juni, Juli, August, September, Oktober, November and Dezember, with "in" as im (im Mai). Ask the time with Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es?, and answer Es ist drei Uhr. Note that halb drei means 2:30 (half to three), and Viertel nach and Viertel vor mean quarter past and quarter to.

Weather: Es ist sonnig, Es ist kalt, Es ist warm, Es regnet (it's raining) and Es schneit (it's snowing).

To say you like doing something, add gern after the verb: Ich schwimme gern (I like swimming), Ich spiele nicht gern Tennis. To say you like a thing, use mögen: Ich mag Schokolade. Lieber means "prefer" (Ich lese lieber).

Key travel words include der Zug, der Bus, die Straßenbahn, die U-Bahn, der Bahnhof, das Gleis (platform), die Fahrkarte (ticket), abfahren (to depart) and ankommen (to arrive). Use mit + dative for a means of transport: mit dem Zug, mit dem Fahrrad, but zu Fuß (on foot). For directions, use links (left), rechts (right), geradeaus (straight ahead), an der Ecke (at the corner) and gegenüber (opposite). Common places include die Post, die Apotheke, das Kaufhaus, der Supermarkt and das Rathaus.

Signs often say geöffnet or geschlossen (open or closed), Öffnungszeiten (opening hours), Eingang and Ausgang (entrance and exit), and Rauchen verboten (no smoking). Official times use the 24-hour clock: 18.30 Uhr is "achtzehn Uhr dreißig." Time-of-day words are morgens, vormittags, mittags, nachmittags, abends and nachts. Forms ask for Name, Vorname, Adresse or Wohnort, Alter, Geburtsdatum, Familienstand (ledig, verheiratet) and Beruf. Professions take no article after sein: Ich bin Student, Sie ist Ärztin. Use seit + dative for "since" or "for": seit zwei Jahren.

In the dative, possessives take the same endings as ein: meinem (masculine and neuter), meiner (feminine) and meinen (plural, with -n on the noun): mit meinem Bruder, mit meiner Schwester, mit meinen Freunden.
