French 1 Unit 5: Everyday vocabulary
Everyday vocabulary for talking about yourself, your family and your day.
Covers: Family, school, food, days, months and time, weather, likes and dislikes
Study guide
Family vocabulary includes la mère and le père (les parents), le frère and la sœur, le fils and la fille, les grands-parents, l'oncle and la tante, and le cousin and la cousine. Possessive adjectives agree with the thing owned, not the owner: mon, ma, mes (my), ton, ta, tes (your), son, sa, ses (his or her), notre, nos (our), votre, vos (your) and leur, leurs (their). Use mon, ton and son before feminine nouns starting with a vowel: mon amie.
School words include l'école, la classe, le professeur, le livre, le cahier, le stylo, le crayon and le sac à dos, and subjects like les maths, l'histoire, les sciences and l'anglais. Food words include le petit déjeuner, le déjeuner and le dîner, l'eau, le lait, le pain, la pomme, le fromage, le poulet and les légumes. To say "some," use the partitive articles du, de la, de l' and des: Je mange du pain.
Days of the week aren't capitalized: lundi, mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi, samedi, dimanche. "Le lundi" means "on Mondays." Months include janvier, février, mars, avril, mai, juin, juillet, août, septembre, octobre, novembre and décembre. Dates use le + number + month: le 14 juillet. Ask the time with Quelle heure est-il ? and answer Il est trois heures, et quart (quarter past), et demie (half past) or moins le quart (quarter to).
Weather: il fait beau, il fait chaud, il fait froid, il pleut (it's raining) and il neige (it's snowing).
Likes and dislikes use aimer, adorer, préférer and détester followed by a definite article or an infinitive: J'aime le chocolat, Je n'aime pas les épinards, J'adore danser, Je préfère lire.
Key place words are la gare (train station), l'arrêt de bus, la poste, la pharmacie, le marché and la mairie. For directions, use à gauche (left), à droite (right), tout droit (straight ahead), en face de (across from), à côté de (next to) and près de / loin de (near / far from). Timetables, store hours and announcements use the 24-hour clock: 14 h 30 is "quatorze heures trente" (2:30 p.m.), and 20 h 15 is "vingt heures quinze." Opening hours often read ouvert du lundi au samedi, de 9 h à 19 h.
Use je voudrais… (I would like…) to ask for things politely. Ask the price with C'est combien ? or Ça coûte combien ? Quantities take de: un kilo de pommes, une bouteille d'eau, beaucoup de pain. On forms, look for nom (last name), prénom (first name), date de naissance, nationalité, adresse, profession and langue(s) parlée(s). Professions usually have no article after être: Je suis étudiant, Elle est médecin.
Daily routines use reflexive verbs: je me lève (I get up), je me douche, je m'habille, je me couche. Invitations often name une fête, un anniversaire or une soirée and ask you to reply avant (before) a date.
