French 1 Unit 6: The passé composé
The passé composé describes completed past actions. It's built with a helper verb (avoir or être) plus a past participle.
Covers: Past participles, passé composé with avoir, with être (DR MRS VANDERTRAMP verbs), agreement with être
Study guide
The passé composé expresses completed actions in the past, like "I ate" or "I have eaten." It has two parts: a helper verb (avoir or être) in the present tense, plus a past participle.
Regular past participles follow the verb's group: -er verbs become -é (parler → parlé, manger → mangé), -ir verbs become -i (finir → fini) and -re verbs become -u (vendre → vendu). Common irregular participles include avoir → eu, être → été, faire → fait, prendre → pris, mettre → mis, voir → vu, boire → bu, lire → lu and écrire → écrit.
Most verbs use avoir: j'ai mangé, tu as fini, il a vendu, nous avons parlé, vous avez fait, ils ont vu.
A group of mostly motion and change-of-state verbs uses être, remembered as DR MRS VANDERTRAMP: devenir, revenir, mourir, retourner, sortir, venir, arriver, naître, descendre, entrer, rentrer, tomber, rester, aller, monter and partir (plus passer). All reflexive verbs also use être.
With être, the past participle agrees with the subject in gender and number, like an adjective. Add -e for a feminine subject, -s for a masculine or mixed plural, and -es for a feminine plural: il est allé, elle est allée, ils sont allés, elles sont allées.
To make the passé composé negative, wrap ne…pas around the helper verb: Je n'ai pas mangé, Elle n'est pas venue. Common past-time expressions include hier (yesterday), hier soir (last night), la semaine dernière (last week), l'année dernière and il y a deux jours (two days ago).
Short common adverbs like déjà, bien, beaucoup, souvent and trop go between the helper verb and the past participle: J'ai bien dormi, Tu as déjà mangé ? All two-part negatives wrap around the helper verb in the passé composé: Je n'ai jamais vu ce film, Il n'a rien mangé. The exception is ne… personne, where personne goes after the participle: Je n'ai vu personne.
