French 1 Unit 4: Être, avoir, aller and faire

These four irregular verbs show up constantly. Many idioms use them in ways English doesn't.

Covers: The four key irregular verbs, expressions with avoir and faire, aller + infinitive (near future)

Study guide

Four irregular verbs are used constantly and must be memorized. Être (to be): je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont. Avoir (to have): j'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont. Aller (to go): je vais, tu vas, il va, nous allons, vous allez, ils vont. Faire (to do or make): je fais, tu fais, il fait, nous faisons, vous faites, ils font.

Avoir appears in many expressions where English uses "to be": avoir … ans (to be … years old: J'ai seize ans), avoir faim (hungry), avoir soif (thirsty), avoir chaud and avoir froid (hot, cold), avoir peur (afraid), avoir raison (right), avoir tort (wrong), avoir sommeil (sleepy) and avoir besoin de (to need).

Faire is used for weather and many activities. Weather expressions use il fait: il fait beau (it's nice out), il fait chaud, il fait froid, il fait du soleil, il fait du vent. Activities include faire du sport, faire du vélo, faire la cuisine (to cook), faire les devoirs (to do homework) and faire les courses (to go grocery shopping).

Aller is combined with places using à, which contracts with le and les: à + le = au, à + les = aux. So Je vais au cinéma, à la plage, aux États-Unis.

Aller + infinitive forms the near future (futur proche), the most common way to talk about plans: Je vais étudier ce soir (I'm going to study tonight), Nous allons voyager. To make it negative, wrap ne…pas around aller: Je ne vais pas sortir.

Use à with cities (à Paris), en with feminine countries and those starting with a vowel (en France, en Italie, en Iran), au with masculine countries (au Canada, au Japon), and aux with plural ones (aux États-Unis). With venir de, de contracts with le and les just as à does: je viens du Canada, des États-Unis, but de France, d'Espagne. Venir: je viens, tu viens, il vient, nous venons, vous venez, ils viennent.
