Mandarin Chinese 2 Unit 1: Aspect Particle 了 and Completed Actions

了 (le) is the most tested particle in second-semester Chinese. It marks an action as completed or a situation as newly changed, and it cannot be treated as a simple past tense.

Covers: Verb + 了 for completed actions, Sentence-final 了 for change of state, Negating with 没(有), Questions with 了吗 and 了没有, 了 with quantified objects, 已经…了 and 快/要…了

Study guide

Chinese verbs do not change form for tense. Instead, time is shown by time words (昨天, 今天, 明天) and by aspect particles that describe how an action unfolds. The particle 了 placed right after a verb marks the action as completed: 我吃了饭 means the eating is done. This is called verb-了 or aspect 了. Because it marks completion rather than past time, it can even appear in the future: 明天我下了课就去找你 means "Tomorrow, after I finish class, I will come find you." Equally important, many past sentences have no 了 at all, especially habits and states: 我小时候常常去公园 (I often went to the park as a child) uses no 了.

Verb-了 usually needs something after it to sound complete, most often a quantified or specific object. 我买了三本书 (I bought three books) and 他喝了一杯咖啡 (He drank a cup of coffee) sound natural. A bare object such as 我买了书 sounds unfinished, as if the speaker will continue: 我买了书就回家了 (After I bought books, I went home). If you simply want to say "I bought books," the more natural sentence puts 了 at the end: 我买书了. A sentence can also use both: 我买了三本书了 suggests "I have bought three books so far."

了 at the end of a sentence is called sentence-final or modal 了. It signals a change of state or a new situation: 下雨了 (It is raining now, and it was not before), 我饿了 (I have become hungry), 他二十岁了 (He is twenty now). It often pairs with 已经 (already): 我已经吃饭了. It also appears in 太…了 (too/so ...): 太好了. With 快, 快要, 要 or 就要, sentence-final 了 marks something about to happen: 快下雨了 (It is about to rain), 火车要开了 (The train is about to leave). Note that 就要…了 can take a time word (明天就要考试了), but 快…了 cannot.

To negate a completed action, use 没 or 没有 before the verb and remove 了: 我没吃早饭 (I did not eat breakfast). Writing 我没吃了早饭 is a classic error. Using 不 instead (我不吃早饭) changes the meaning to "I don't eat breakfast" as a habit or refusal. However, sentence-final 了 can combine with 不 to show a change: 我不去了 means "I'm not going anymore" (I changed my mind). Likewise, 没 + 了 does work in duration sentences like 我三天没吃肉了 (I haven't eaten meat for three days).

There are three common ways to ask whether something happened. Add 吗 to a sentence with 了: 你吃饭了吗? Add 没有 at the end: 你吃饭了没有? Or use the verb-没-verb pattern without 了: 你吃没吃饭? A short positive answer is the verb plus 了 (吃了), and a short negative answer is 没有 or 还没(有) plus the verb (还没吃呢). The word 呢 often follows 还没 to mean "not yet."

Key ideas

Formulas and rules

Subject + Verb + 了 + number/measure word + Object (我看了两部电影)
Subject + (已经) + Verb + Object + 了 (我已经做作业了)
Subject + 没(有) + Verb + Object (no 了) (他没来)
Questions: …了吗? / …了没有? / Verb + 没 + Verb + Object?
快/快要/就要 + Verb + 了 = about to happen (时间就要到了)
Verb₁ + 了 + Object, 就 + Verb₂ = do V₂ right after V₁ (我下了课就回家)

Sample practice questions

30 more questions like these, from level 1 to 5, are in the practice set.

Question 1 (level 1)

What does the particle 了 placed directly after a verb usually show?

  1. The action is a wish
  2. The action is still ongoing
  3. The action is a daily habit
  4. The action is completed
Show the answer and steps

Answer: D) The action is completed

  1. Verb-了 is an aspect marker.
  2. It tells you the action has been carried out to completion.
  3. So it shows completion, not ongoing action or habit.
Question 2 (level 1)

How do you negate a completed action such as 我吃了早饭?

  1. 我不吃了早饭。
  2. 我吃了没早饭。
  3. 我没吃了早饭。
  4. 我没吃早饭。
Show the answer and steps

Answer: D) 我没吃早饭。

  1. Completed actions are negated with 没 or 没有 before the verb.
  2. 了 must be dropped when 没 is used.
  3. So the correct form is 我没吃早饭; keeping 了 is the classic trap.
Question 3 (level 3)

Which sentence about a past habit is correct?

  1. 我小时候常常去奶奶家。
  2. 我小时候常常去奶奶家了了。
  3. 我小时候常常去了奶奶家。
  4. 我小时候常常了去奶奶家。
Show the answer and steps

Answer: A) 我小时候常常去奶奶家。

  1. Repeated past habits are not single completed events.
  2. Words like 常常 and 每天 usually do not take 了.
  3. So the sentence without 了 is correct; adding 了 is the over-use trap.
