Units

  1. UNIT 01

    Aspect Particle 了 and Completed Actions

    了 (le) is the most tested particle in second-semester Chinese. It marks an action as completed or a situation as newly changed, and it cannot be treated as a simple past tense.
  2. UNIT 02

    Experience with 过 and Progressive 在 and 着

    This unit adds three more aspect markers: 过 for things you have experienced at least once, 在/正在 for actions happening right now, and 着 for states that continue or the manner of doing something.
  3. UNIT 03

    Complements of Degree with 得

    A complement of degree uses 得 to describe how well, how fast or to what extent an action is done, as in 他说得很快. It is the standard way to comment on skills and habits.
  4. UNIT 04

    Resultative and Directional Complements

    Complements attached directly to verbs tell you the result of an action (看懂, 做完) or its direction (走进来, 拿出去). They are one of the biggest steps between beginner and intermediate Chinese.
  5. UNIT 05

    Comparisons with 比, 没有 and 一样

    Chinese compares things with the pattern A 比 B + adjective. This unit covers how to add amounts, how to say "not as ... as," how to say "the same," and how to compare actions.
  6. UNIT 06

    Time, Duration and Frequency

    Chinese separates the point in time when something happens (before the verb) from how long or how often it happens (after the verb). Getting this word order right is central to second-year tests.
  7. UNIT 07

    The 把 Construction

    The 把 construction moves a specific object in front of the verb to stress what happens to it: 我把作业写完了 (I finished the homework). It is essential for giving instructions and describing where things are put.
  8. UNIT 08

    The 被 Passive

    被 sentences put the receiver of an action first: 我的自行车被偷了 (My bike was stolen). They are often used for unwanted events, and they mirror the structure of 把 sentences.
  9. UNIT 09

    Conjunctions: 因为…所以, 虽然…但是, 如果…就

    Paired conjunctions let you connect two clauses to show cause, contrast, condition, addition and sequence. Unlike English, Chinese often uses both halves of the pair.
  10. UNIT 10

    Shopping, Travel and Daily Life

    This unit brings the year's grammar into real situations: paying and bargaining, getting around a city, booking travel and ordering food. Tests often include price and discount calculations.
