German 1 Unit 3: Present tense regular verbs
Most German verbs follow one set of endings. Drop -en and add the ending for the subject.
Covers: Subject pronouns, regular verb endings, questions, negation with nicht and kein
Study guide
German subject pronouns are ich (I), du (you, informal), er (he), sie (she), es (it), wir (we), ihr (you all, informal), sie (they) and Sie (you, formal). Sie for "she," "they" and formal "you" are distinguished by the verb ending and capitalization.
To conjugate a regular verb in the present tense, drop the infinitive ending -en to find the stem, then add the endings: ich -e, du -st, er/sie/es -t, wir -en, ihr -t, sie/Sie -en. For spielen: ich spiele, du spielst, er spielt, wir spielen, ihr spielt, sie spielen. If the stem ends in -t or -d, add an extra e to make it pronounceable: du arbeitest, er findet. The German present tense covers "I play," "I am playing" and "I do play," and often the near future too.
Some common verbs change their stem vowel in the du and er forms: fahren → du fährst, er fährt; sehen → du siehst; essen → du isst. These must be learned.
To ask a yes/no question, put the verb first: Spielst du Gitarre? (Do you play guitar?). Question words go first, followed by the verb: Wo wohnst du? Question words include wer (who), was (what), wo (where), wann (when), warum (why), wie (how) and woher (where from).
There are two ways to negate. Nicht negates verbs, adjectives and specific nouns with the definite article, and it usually goes near the end of the sentence or before what it negates: Ich spiele nicht. Kein negates nouns that would have ein or no article: Ich habe keinen Bruder, Ich habe keine Zeit. Kein takes the same endings as ein.
Many verbs have separable prefixes, such as aufstehen, anrufen, einkaufen, aussteigen and fernsehen. In a present-tense statement or question, the prefix goes to the end of the clause: Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf, Rufst du mich an? Verbs with be-, ver-, er-, ent-, emp- and zer- never split: Ich besuche meine Oma, Ich verstehe das nicht. The stress falls on the stem, not the prefix.
