Learn to greet people, introduce yourself and count.

Covers: Greetings, introductions, du vs Sie, numbers 0–100, pronunciation (ä, ö, ü, ß)

Study guide

German greetings vary by time of day and formality. Guten Morgen (good morning), Guten Tag (good day, hello), Guten Abend (good evening) and Gute Nacht (good night) are standard, and Hallo is a casual hi. In southern Germany and Austria you'll also hear Grüß Gott and Servus. Ask Wie geht es Ihnen? (formal) or Wie geht's? (informal), and answer Gut, danke; Sehr gut; Es geht (so-so) or Nicht so gut. Goodbyes include Auf Wiedersehen (formal), Tschüss (informal) and Bis später (see you later). Please is bitte, thank you is danke, and bitte also means "you're welcome."

To introduce yourself, say Ich heiße… or Mein Name ist… Ask Wie heißt du? (informal) or Wie heißen Sie? (formal). Respond with Freut mich (nice to meet you). Ich komme aus… means "I come from…"

German has two kinds of "you." Du is informal and singular, for friends, family, children and peers, and its plural is ihr. Sie (always capitalized) is formal for one or more people, used with adults you don't know well, teachers and in business.

Numbers 0–12 are null, eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn, elf, zwölf; 13–19 add -zehn (dreizehn, vierzehn), with sechzehn and siebzehn shortened. The tens are zwanzig, dreißig, vierzig, fünfzig, sechzig, siebzig, achtzig, neunzig, and hundert. From 21 on, the ones come first: einundzwanzig (one-and-twenty), fünfundsiebzig (75). Numbers are written as one word.

Pronunciation: w sounds like English v, v sounds like f, z sounds like ts, j sounds like y, and ch is a soft or throaty sound. Umlauts change vowels: ä (like "eh"), ö (rounded lips saying "ay") and ü (rounded lips saying "ee"). ß (Eszett) sounds like ss.

Letter names are a, be, ce, de, e, ef, ge, ha, i, jot, ka, el, em, en, o, pe, ku, er, es, te, u, vau, we, ix, ypsilon and zet, plus ä, ö, ü and eszett (ß). Spelling your name aloud is a standard A1 task: "Wie schreibt man das?" Ordinals add -te up to 19 and -ste from 20: erste, zweite, dritte, vierte, siebte, zwanzigste. They appear in floors (im dritten Stock), dates (am 3. Mai, read "am dritten Mai") and school years (in der 5. Klasse).

To talk about languages, say Ich spreche Deutsch und ein bisschen Spanisch. Most country names are neuter and take no article (aus Deutschland, aus Österreich), but a few do: aus der Schweiz, aus der Türkei, aus den USA. Informal emails open with Liebe (to a woman) or Lieber (to a man) followed by a comma, and the next line starts in lowercase: "Lieber Tom, danke für…" Close with Viele Grüße or Liebe Grüße. Formal letters use Sehr geehrte Frau…, / Sehr geehrter Herr… and close with Mit freundlichen Grüßen.
